Movie Reviews: The Dirty Picture (2011)

THE DIRTY PICTURE banks heavily on shock - value, sex - value and most importantly, script - value. It's an exceptional portrayal of an ordinary person's rise from scratch to extraordinary heights and her subsequent fall. Read More

While the first half takes off with good intensity and reaches a strong interval bang, the second half slows down a bit taking the routine path. But the execution of the action sequences was good. Technically, the film is well made and it has been packaged with good production values. Read More

Bejawada is a total disappointment. Neither it does provide entertainment, nor it provokes thoughts. The movie doesn't deserve all the hype and publicity as it has nothing to do with the so called rowdy / caste wars of Vijayawada city. It is another mindless action movie with inconsistent narration. Read More

'Twilight' stays bright but Hollywood snoozes

The latest "Twilight" movie cast the longest shadow with $16.9 million for a third-straight No. 1 finish during one of the year's slowest weekends at the box office.

Business was dismal, with box-office tracker Hollywood.com estimating Sunday that domestic revenues totaled just $82 million. That puts it barely ahead of Hollywood's worst haul of the year, when revenues were $81.5 million over the second weekend in September.

Once studios release final numbers Monday, this past weekend could come in as the worst of the year if revenues finish even lower.

The first weekend of December often presents a lull in between big Thanksgiving holiday releases and the onslaught of year-end blockbusters that arrive a bit later. But this big a slowdown is surprising given that there's quality stuff out there among the top-10 films, particularly family fare such as "The Muppets," "Hugo" and "Arthur Christmas."

Hollywood executives usually blame bad weekends on a weak crop of movies.

"It's tough to blame it on the product when the product is pretty good and the films are solid," said Hollywood.com analyst Paul Dergarabedian. "While the post-Thanksgiving weekend is typically slow, it's not usually this slow."

The dreary weekend comes after a relatively quiet Thanksgiving holiday at movie theaters, despite analysts' predictions of potential holiday records because of a great lineup of films.

But more fans might be thinking twice about heading out to theaters given the new entertainment options they have with Apple's iPad, Amazon's Kindle products and other gadgets, along with their big-screen home setups for movies and television.

Or it could be that Hollywood has temporarily neglected its mainstay audience of young males. Dergarabedian said there's little out there now for guys looking for thrills and laughs.

That will change in the coming weeks as Jonah Hill's comedy "The Sitter" opens Friday, followed by a rush of action tales: Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible _ Ghost Protocol," Robert Downey Jr.'s "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" and Steven Spielberg's "The Adventures of Tintin."

Women and families continue to dominate the scanty business at theaters now. Summit Entertainment's female-driven blockbuster "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn _ Part 1" raised its domestic haul to $247.3 million. "Breaking Dawn" added $40.2 million overseas, taking it to a tally of $341 million internationally and $588.3 million worldwide.

Coming in second again was Disney's "The Muppets" with $11.2 million, lifting the family film's domestic total to $56.1 million. Despite good reviews, though, "The Muppets" audience was off more sharply than any other top-10 movie compared to Thanksgiving weekend.

Paramount's family adventure "Hugo," an acclaimed saga directed by Martin Scorsese, finished third with $7.6 million, raising its domestic take to $25.2 million.

Sony's animated holiday comedy "Arthur Christmas" was fourth with $7.4 million, pushing its total to $25.3 million.

In limited release, Fox Searchlight's sexually explicit drama "Shame" opened strongly with $361,181 at 10 theaters in six cities. "Shame" expands to six more cities Friday.

Starring Michael Fassbender in a grim portrait of a sex addict, "Shame" is the latest film angling to lure moviegoers despite an NC-17 rating that prohibits anyone younger than 17 from seeing it.

Some fans and theaters equate the NC-17 tag with pornography, but serious films with that rating occasionally break through and find an audience. Fox Searchlight is positioning "Shame" for Academy Awards attention after the film earned Fassbender the best-actor prize at the Venice Film Festival.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

Angelina Jolie Takes the Kids to See The Muppets!

Is there anything better than Christmas in New York City? How about a family movie date!

That's exactly what Angelina Jolie, sans Brad Pitt, did on Saturday in Manhattan with Pax, 8, Zahara, 6, and Shiloh, 5.

And did the family really head in to check out the latest adventure of Kermit, Miss Piggy and friends?

Yup, they were all about the family-friendly The Muppets.

Jolie and the kids arrived at the movie theatre holding hands—so sweet!—and sporting chic attire: Jolie rocked an all-black ensemble with aviators, while Pax wore a cool shark hoodie and Shiloh donned a T-shirt with a fake necktie and motorcycle boots.

Opting out of spending quality time with Kermit and Miss Piggy were Maddox and the twins, Vivienne and Knox.

Nicole Scherzinger Spills About New Album

Nicole Scherzinger is getting up from The X Factor judges' table to do some singing and dancing of her own.

Get ready for it!

The former Pussycat Dolls frontwoman exclusively tells me...

She will perform on an upcoming episode of the hit Fox series. Nice!

"I have the song in mind, but I never know if I'm going to change my mind depending on how I'm feeling," she said.

This is just a preview of what's to come for Ms. Scherzinger. The long-awaited U.S. release of her album, Killer Love, is now set for early next year. "I'm so excited," she said. "My fans have been so loyal and just waiting. Obviously I've been waiting to put the album out to make sure that I have the time and the love to promote it."

Tracks range from "really awesome dance" tunes to those that "are really personal," Scherzinger said. "I've gone deeper than I've ever gone...The album's called Killer Love because I'm talking about love, a hard love. It's worth going through if it's meant to be. I've been through a lot of hard times in my life and I'm sharing that through my music."

When we talked, Scherzinger was getting ready to perform at a Jingle Ball concert in Phoenix before jumping on a plane to London for Monday's annual Royal Variety Performance gala. Andrew Lloyd Weber personally invited her to perform two songs from Phantom of the Opera to mark the 25th anniversary of his hit stage musical.

And then it's back to The X Factor. Watching Drew Ryniewicz get cut wasn't easy. It never is. "It breaks my heart and that's why I'm crying, too," she said. "I'm not a judge first—I'm an artist first. I've been there. I know what it's like. I know how devastated she is and how much it means to her."

Scherzinger's prediction for the end? "I want Josh [Krajcik] to go all the way," she said of her remaining Over-30s contestant. "I believe in him so much. I think it's between him and Melanie [Amaro]."

Kim Kardashian's pre-nup to be annulled?

Kris Humphries is battling for his pre-nuptial agreement with Kim Kardashian to be annulled.

After the 31-year-old socialite filed for divorce from the basketball star after just 72 days of marriage, Kris wants the legal document declared null and void on the grounds of "fraud".

If the existing pre-nup is cast aside, it will mean the sportsman isn't restrained by a strict confidentiality clause which currently prevents both Kim and Kris from discussing the intimate details of their relationship with the media.

A source told RadarOnline.com: "The confidentiality aspect of the pre-nup is extensive and was created just in case things went bad, neither Kim nor Kris could discuss their relationship to the media.

"But now, Kris wants to be able to talk about the relationship without fear of being sued."

Kris is already planning to hit back at Kim's divorce petition with an annulment request and if this is legally granted by a judge, it would mean the couple were never legally married and the contract between them no longer stands.

The insider added: "Kris is getting excellent legal advice. If the judge annuls the marriage, they were never legally married, and the pre-nup at that point is really moot.

"Kris wants this to play out in court, and wants the process to be transparent. If this needs to go to trial, he is ready for that. The gloves are off, Kris won't be a doormat anymore."

The socialite has been busy in the studio working on the follow-up to her 2006 music debut, "Paris".

Dailystar.co.uk reports that a track entitled "Platinum Blonde" hit the web earlier this week, and gossips speculated it would be Hilton's comeback song - but the blonde beauty has shot down the rumours.

"For those of you who are asking, Platinum Blonde is not my new single. Just a song I did a few years ago. My new music is totally different," she posted.

Ewan McGregor Talks ‘Beginners’

It’s great to see the terrific film Beginners getting some awards attention. It’s the story of a father (Christopher Plummer) and son (Ewan McGregor) and what happens when the father comes out late in life.

McGregor talked to Frontiers IN LA about the movie, his popularity with gay audiences and more. Here is an excerpt:

In Beginners, your character goes through a process that’s almost like a rediscovery of his father when Christopher Plummer’s character comes out at the age of 75. Did you personally discover anything about the gay community through the making of the film that you hadn’t known beforehand?

I learned a lot about American gay history, because I think Mike [Mills, the film’s director] really beautifully explores it in the montages where he’s looking back at his father’s life as a young gay man in the early ‘50s, with an aim to try to understand what that might be like and why his father made the choices that he made. He makes it very real, that history, and it doesn’t feel like a history lesson. It’s an exploration of his dad’s younger years. And then how not very long ago gay men were being thrown into the back of police trucks andarrested for going to gay coffee shops. That sort of stuff I found very interesting—how recently it happened, when it seems so long ago.

You’re a very popular actor among the gay community for many reasons, but primarily because you appear in films and roles that really speak to gay men. How do you choose which roles you take on?
Well, it’s just a very gut process really. I’m not very complicated about it—if I find a script I don’t want to put down and I like that it’s firing my imagination and I start to see myself in that role, and it’s about something I’m interested to talk about, then I’ll do it. It’s kinda as simple as that really. I try not to make it anymore complicated than that.

http://www.halamovie.com/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/201105/87e1e_i-love-you-phillip-morris—official-still.jpgOccasionally it does [get more complicated]—I suppose the more you do it, the more you start thinking about directors. You know, I’ve made a lot of films, and you start thinking, “Well OK, now I want to make really good films.” You try to narrow down the possibilities of them not being good, so I suppose nowadays I take more note about the directors. But then again, if I love a script and it’s a first-time director, I’ll probably still do it because that first-time director is probably firing at 110 percent.

In regards to the gay community and myself, I’m delighted, but I’m just interested in people and life. I’m interested in sexuality and sex, relationships and love and what makes us tick, and it doesn’t matter whether that’s heterosexual or gay romance. I don’t really mind it, I just find it interesting. I’ve never really gone out to try to play a gay person, because I don’t really believe you could do that, and if you did, it wouldn’t be a very good portrayal of anybody. So I go out to play a person, and their sexuality is a part of what makes them up—of course, it’s a very important part of what makes us up, but it’s not everything—it’s not.

SRK to play lead in 'Kanchana'?

It is definitely an achievement of sorts for Lawrence. He has no BO scorcher to his credit, only inspiring commercial hits, but Raghava would be making leapfrog to Bollywood. Why we call it'leapfrog' is because, unlike, say, AR Murugadoss, he has no super hit that can be called a biggest blockbuster of the year etc.

Lawrence will direct the Hindi remake version of Kanchana. Guess who would be playing Lawrence and Sharath Kumar's roles, Shah Rukh Khan and Sanjay Dutt, respectively.

Other important details regarding the remainder cast and technical crew is not out as yet. However, it is clear that SRK and Sanjay Dutt are excited about playing a possessed man and a transgender in this acclaimed Tamil-Telugu bi-lingual released in 2010.

Prabhas' new film begins shoot

It is known that Prabhas has a film scheduled with Koratala Shiva, the script-writer who is to a director with his film. The film, which is tentatively as Vaaradhi, started off yesterday and a few scenes were reportedly shot in at the Police Academy establishment in Hyderabad.

The film stars Anushka Shetty and Richa Gangopadhyaya in the leads. It is jointly produced by Pramod Uppalapati and Vamikrishna Reddy.

The star seems to have taken a break from his Rebel schedule. The high-profile film is also scheduled to release early next year. However, not much is heard about the movie these days. This owes to the fact that the makers are preferring to not go gung-ho creating a hype about the film. Nevertheless, the audience have full faith on the talent of both Lawrence Raghava and Prabhas, who are in their best form at present.

If Rebel becomes a hit, it would be a shot in the arm for Koratala Shiva.

Businessman to wrap up by Dec. 10

The unit of The Businessman is back in Hyderabad after shooting two spectacular songs in picturesque sights in Krabi and Pataya, Bangkok. With the shooting of the patch work, which starts from Dec. 2, the film will be wrapped up by Dec. 10.

Progress on the front of post-production works is also going at a brisk pace. The re-recording works of the first half have already begun. The makers are planning to bring out the first copy by the month end.

"We are planning to release the movie on Jan. 11 in the highest number of theaters. The number of screens in which the film is going to be released is unprecedented in the history of Telugu cinema. The dialogues in the film will become more popular than the dialogues of Pokiri," says a press release.

The makers also say that the theme song, which is rendered by Mahesh and Puri, will create a craze of its own.

Pokiri, released in 2006, was a run-away hit. The film is the best in the career of Prince till date. The film is remembered for the cheeky one-liners spouted by Mahesh. So much so, its lines are still used as spoofs in many movies.

Panjaa: A technical marvel?

Panjaa is in news for many reasons. But, one very important element of the film that has been widely talked about is its technical richness. The makers have been since the beginning branding the film as a technical film enriched by sleek action episodes shot on Pawan Kalyan.

How Pawan would excel in action sequences if he is aided by a flawless technical setting, is going to be proved by Panjaa. This is the gut feeling one gains after seeing its trailers and hearing its makers describe their much-awaited film.

The film's cinematography by PS Vindo looks tantalisingly impressive. Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja doesn't need introduction. The news is that the background score is going to be even more rocking.

Sreekar Prasad's editing will ensure that the piece looks nifty.

Looks like we are in for a technical marvel. Watch this space fore more!

Charan wears massy costumes in Raccha

Folks, you will not expect Ram Charan to wear colorful costumes in Raccha. Unlike in his previous films, Raccha will portray the look of a mass hero in his next. The Sampath Nandi-directed film will present Cherry in a never-seen-before get-up.

What is surprising is that its costume designer Ravi Kumar bought the apparel from some shops in centers like Kacheguda in Hyderabad and worked on them to create new designs for the hero.

The actor's look in the film has been carefully kept under the wraps for obvious reasons. Currently shot in China, the film has a remix version of the 'Vana Vana' number from Gang Leader. The hitherto classy actor will sport an irreverent look in Raccha, which makes it quite interesting as well as curious.
